LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear Members,

I am writing to you today with happier news concerning the tennis club. Some of the following you may already know from the ubiquitous rumour mills that ensure news is passed efficiently from member to member, but I wish to inform you all officially.

Manager

The Board after a wide search and competition has selected Larry Greene to be our new manager, and Elaine Courteau to be our new assistant manager, for 2012. Larry has been a part owner and general manager at Le Sportheque sports club for the past 16 years. He has recently sold most of his interest in Le Sportheque and moved on to other ventures. His long experience in managing a sports business and his commitment to the spirit of sport will well address the management needs of our club. Equally Elaine brings long experience and an outgoing personality to the role of assistant manager. The Board is very pleased with our good fortune in recruiting these two remarkable people to join us. We will be well served.

The Club is scheduled to open Saturday 14 April. Larry will begin his duties on 1 April, and Elaine on 14 April. The hard courts will be available at the same time or earlier if the weather permits, while the soft courts will require a few additional weeks to dry out and be serviced.

Payment of Annual Fees

The Board has redesigned the annual fee form to take into account the new fee schedule approved by the Board for 2012. A copy is attached. I request Members to print and complete the form, calculate the fees you owe, attach your personal cheque, and mail it to the Club at RLTC, 465 Lansdowne Road North, Ottawa K1M 0Y1, to arrive no later than 1 April. Canada Post will forward your letter to the Treasurer. There will be a financial penalty for fees received after 1 May.

Parking

Parking at the Club will present Members with some difficulties this year. The house construction immediately in front of the Club proceeds apace, but will not be complete before the end of this year's tennis season. Members will recall that there were a few altercations with the foreman of the construction company late last summer as his tradesmen took many of the parking spaces normally used by Members.. The Board wishes to avoid any argy bargy this summer.

We met with the City Manager responsible for parking and bylaw enforcement. He was clear that the parking spaces which abut the Club on the east do not in fact belong to the Club, but are on a City right of way. The City has chosen not to enforce parking regulations against members or the trades on this land, but it could if matters become out of hand.

The Board has tried without success to date to meet the owner of the house (apparently he is also the owner of the construction company) to seek an accommodation, a compromise, which would allow both the trades and the Members to share the parking spaces during the day. We shall continue to pursure this option.

This problem will exist for this year only, and once the house is complete, we shall be able to return to our traditional parking. The Board does not think confrontation with the owner will be in the members' interest, and is convinced that the City would impose its own rules if we took the issue too far.

I send to you my best wishes.

David Adam on behalf of the Board
